Thinking of heading out Saturday at Commercials to catch some Rockfish.  Going to plan on heading out later than usual, maybe around 10 a.m. to let the fog burn off, if its not too stormy.  Theres not supposed to be much swell or wind, but a possibilty of fog, thunderstorms or a beautiful flat day out on the water. 7.10.08

I paddled out at Marvin's Corral after work this evening to target some Halibut.  I found a nice big patch of sand in between some kelp patties.  Dropped down the Sabiki rig and caught bait on every swift jig.

My live bait on the Halibut rig was getting hit only after a couple minutes in the water.  I hooked up and then something broke off.  Dropped again on a slow drift with a new live bait and something chomped off both my hooks.  Forgot extra hooks so I pulled a 4 oz leadhead off a swimbait and hooked it through the back of a live dine.  Dropped again and hooked up with a nice Sandshark about 3 and a half feet long wearing my old hooks as bling bling.

I've never kept a Sandshark before and wanted to get this one to shore.  It had the 4 oz leadhead perfectly hooked in the mouth and I was leary about taking it out.  I gaffed the tail and dragged him along side the boat.

I've been told you have to fillet them while still alive and that they are good eating.  Some nice fillets, meat has a strange texture, so we'll see if its any good.  Also caught a Grassy right beside a shallow wave break. 7.10.08

MLPA advocates hope to close at least 20 percent of Southern California's coastal waters to fishing.  Insiders say the process could put the La Jolla and Point Loma kelp beds off limits to fishing.  The rumor is the whole front side of Catalina Island will be off limits to fishing. 7.10.08

The Halibut are on the bite in Morro Bay.  The guys at Virgs said some yakkers caught a couple right out front of the store.  Today I saw a couple boats drifting the bay and wished I was out there.

The Yak Pack is trying to plan a day when we can go out and drift the incoming tide along side of a boat and get a taxi back to drift it again.  May have a boat in mind, but if anyone wants to fish with us and hook us up a ride, let us know. 7.9.08

This fish was caught 6/29 at Leffingwell on John’s hot spot.  Third fish caught of the day for me after John already had a limit in one hour.  Ended up one fish short of a rockfish limit with this one ling.  Back at the launch at 10:00.

Travis 7.9.08

Travis I got your pic of that nice Ling on your Hobie.  It looked like it was a very flat day out on the water.  Didn't get any message, but I bet that Ling was caught out at Commercials and your friends with John?  Team Hobie.  Good man, I see you got a Kencor too. 7.8.08

Hey there John, just wanted to give you the run down on the fishing.  We have been fishing PSL the majority of the time for halibut {no legals}, assorted rockfish, big cabezon, busted off a big ling, lost a Seal at the boat.... ha ha.  Fun fight!

Cayucos scored us a ling, rock sole, and assorted rockfish. Fishing has been good.  Saw probably 5-6 keeper halibut caught sat..

John 7.8.08

I took my kayak out for the first time yesterday.  No problems.  Survived the surf.  I might try some fishing this afternoon.  Let me know if you are going out this week.  I would also like to see your kayak rigging and maybe you could take a look at my yak.

Went out in my brother-in-laws boat on Sunday.  Brought back 18 assorted rock fish on B2 Squid and a Duh jigging spoon now called a Bait Runner.  Also had two short lings and a small shark.  We fished between Cayucos and the abb farm.

Mike 7.8.08

It looks like decent weather for this coming weekend.  I would like to get out and do some rockfishing off the yak on either Saturday or Sunday.  Thinking of paddling out at either Spoonies if theres no wind or in the N. San Simeon area, not sure yet.  Anyone planning on heading out? 7.7.08

Burn't some dinosaur bones Saturday on my brother in laws 22' Robolo, caught two keepers off Pirates Cove in around 30-40' water.

Planning on heading out on the yak Friday anyone else?

Gordon 7.7.08

I enjoy reading the fish reports all the time.  Regarding the PANGA rods, my buddy builds a super yak rod also, uses a pac bay blank, if anybody interested give TOM a call at 462.3330.

We are also members of the CAMBRIA fishing club and fish a lot of YAKS.  I have not made the jump yet.  I have fished out of my sons COSTCO yaks but am thinking of purchasing a fish n dive .

For now my son and I fish all the time out of our diesel rig, but with the price its looking like paddling may be the answer, its a long way to the ALBIS tho..

Tom has some awesome Roberts wrap customs in stock now, I think he has four built and for sale, they are ready to go and Tom will put the owners int on the rod.  Keep up the reports and look forward to meeting with you.  I know some of the guys you fish with already, sparks, AKA piper.

The Yak Pack had its biggest turnout yet at PSL on Sunday morning.  It was a pleasure to meet Jeff and Marc for the first time.  Also very cool to fish with Kevin, Rusty, Tim and Gage for the first time and of course Lilly, Bruce, and George too.  Marc and I are interested in slinging some Halibut at PSL, let us know if you are interested too.

The early morning started out with some good activity in the fog.  Kevin got ripped early, but the Halibut quickly let loose.  Then he got his live bait raked hard in the shallows around the kelp beds.  Another early bird live bait drifter landed 5 Halibuts with one legal at 23 inches.  For the rest of us it was a very nice day to be on the water.  The only thing chomping on my bait was all the bait in the bay.

I must have seen at least a dozen Kencor rods today and everyone loves them.  Virg's usually has the  5' 4" Kencor rod in stock and is a must have for kayak fishing.

The fog burned off and it was another beautiful day at the beach.  I think Jeff headed out toward the breakwall for some rockfish as we paddled in.  Check out the new pics of some of the guys on their Assault Rigs.  If I missed something and you want to add your take on the trip email: CayucosSportfishing@gmail.com 7.6.08

The Yak Pack Sunday morning Halibut run at PSL.  We are going to launch at the ramp and do some trolling.  Going out around 8:30 a.m. to hunt down Barn Doors. 7.4.08

(a) San Francisco and San Pablo bays between the Golden Gate Bridge and the west Carquinez Bridge, where only one line with not more than three hooks may be used.

(b) On public piers, no person shall use more than two rods and lines, two hand lines, or two nets, traps or other appliances used to take crabs.

For the purpose of this section a gaff hook is any hook with or without a handle used to assist in landing fish or to take fish in such a manner that the fish does not take the hook voluntarily in its mouth. No person shall take finfish from any boat or other floating device in ocean waters without having a landing net in possession or available for immediate use to assist in landing undersize fish of species having minimum size limits; the opening of any such landingnet shall be not less than eighteen inches in diameter.

Possession of such gear aboard a vessel shall be prima facie evidence that the gear is being used in violation of this regulation.

(g) North of Point Conception to Horse Mountain, Section 27.80(a)(3) applies to each angler fishing for salmon or fishing from any boat or floating device with salmon on board.

When trolling for Halibut on the Central Coast you can use muliple rods, but you need to have a landing net at least 18 inches wide on board.  2 pole license is for fresh water only. 7.3.08

Send us your fish reports, we want to hear from you. CayucosSportfishing@gmail.com 7.3.08

I paddled out at the PSL ramp this morning all rigged up for trolling Halibut around 7:30 a.m, beautiful morning and afternoon.  Trolled two poles along the beach and didn't get any bites, so I dropped jigs in the kelp beds for a while.  In the beds I almost ran over a huge Ray which made me jump out of my seat.  The beds were slow too, so I decided to go troll the beach again.

OMG!  I got hooked up onto something huge on the troll.  It was stripping the line right off my reel.  I grabbed the pole as the line zipped across the water.  It went around some kelp and went straight around the swimmers bouy giving me some really good tugs.  Ended up bending two of the three treble hooks over as it released itself.  I will never use pre-made Halibut Rigs again after I saw those hooks bend over like that.  Weak!  I bet it was a huge Halibut, Shark or that Ray.

I ended up finding my swimbait that the monster spit out.  It was a white swimbait that I cut in half and used the Halibut Rig on.  I put that back on and soon got ripped on it again.  This time it was a 22 inch Halibut that I netted and released.  Trolled a little more and decided to call it.

Cabo Dan showed up on the beach as I was packing up to check things out.  We hung out and got some sun watching his dog run up and down the beach checking out the scenery and telling fish stories.

Dan is the owner of Cabo San Luis restaurant and a Yak Pack member from the start.   He wants to put up pictures from The Yak Pack adventures in his restaurant that is next to Shell on Foothill.  If you bring in a cool pic of someone kayak fishing or their catch to Cabo San Luis, he'll hook you up with a two fish taco lunch special.  Just tell them you're in The Yak Pack. 7.3.08

Halibut Tournament in Port San Luis.  The 15th annual PSL Halibut 2-day tournament will be July 26-27.  Cash, Raffle Prizes, BBQ and lots of fun.

There is a special catagory for 16' and under boats this year.  Call Portside for more details 595-7214 or 595-7895 7.2.08

Heading to PSL Thursday morning with my kayak, snorkel and sling to catch me some Butts.  Anyone want to join in?  Going to start off on the kayak with a white on white swimbait or maybe some 'dines from Deke.  Then possibly snorkel and try out the new sling close to shore. 7.1.08

I could pretty much cut and paste Josh's 6/28 report from Port San Luis and be done here.  My day was pretty much the same, except I was able to pick up live bait from Deke.

Deke gave me about a half dozen huge dines, would not accept any payment and then pointed me to where fish were caught the day before. WHAT A GREAT GUY!  I had several raked baits and one just legal boated.  First one of the year so I kept it, grilled it hours later with lemon butter & garlic, then a drizzle of fresh made basil pesto. Very tasty.

I was not able to pick up treble hooks for the trap hook before setting out.  I think if I was fishing with treble hooks I would have boated at least one or two more fish.  All the action was in 5' - 10' of water between the first and second pier in sand just off the rocks.  I got a couple strikes right at the river mouth at Avila Beach.  Water was flat and the wind did not pick up till noon.   Ryan and Bob showed up a little later and they were more on the rock fish action.  I think they did ok.

8:00 p.m. hight tide tonight, anyone up for and evening halibut chase? I'm trying to get back out tonight.

Photos from a tin boat run Sunday morning, lots of Gophers with one good fish.  I saw John from Spooners out off of Leffingwell.

BK 6.29.08

San Simeon fish report from the trip out at Commercials on Saturday morning.  It was a slow day for The Yak Pack out there, but it was like a lake.  The bite was mostly Gophers.  John: 9 fish kept, mostly Gophers, 1 Olive, couple of Browns and 1 short Ling released.  Travis: 8 Gophers.  Me: 3 Gophers, 1 Brown and 1 Treefish.  No big fish, no Reds.  This other guy Andy, caught 1 keeper Ling among some other fish.

Marc 6.29.08

I was out this morning kayak fishing for Halibut at Port San Luis.  I don't have a live well so I grabbed a bag of frozen Chovies and headed out at the second beach with the ramp.  I fished on the inside anywhere from 5-25 feet deep.  I had a couple raked baits and ended up landing a 24 inch keeper.  Wish I had my camera.  I was using a slip sinker and a two hook setup.  A trap hook is a must (preferably a treble).  I will be back out later in the week.  Seemed like it was a slower day, lots of boats and not too many fish.

Josh 6.28.08

Ryan and Bob are going to fish really early Sunday morning out at Port San Luis.  They are looking to pick up some live bait before heading out to kayak fish for Halibut.  If you wanna go, they'll be picking up live bait early in the morning at the bait barge.  Meet em' out there. 6.28.08

Kevin and I headed out to target some Halibut in Port San Luis early this morning on his boat.  Started out getting a couple hookups, but both quickly released and then it got really slow.  Picked up a 3 lb Brown on the troll.

Decided to head up toward Diablo to catch some rockfish, short Lings, Gopher and another Brown.  On the way back in Kevin caught a legal size Halibut that I ended up losing with the net.  Doh!  Then he caught and released a 4 foot long Shovel Nose Shark that we both thought was a giant Halibut at first sight.  It was a great day of fishing, but didn't get to take home any Butts. The DFG said she saw a few small Halibut come in Today.  They're out there. 6.28.08

It was another tough day of fishing for The Yak Pack in Arroyo Laguna.  The smoke/fog was thick in the morning with very low visibility at times and the wind was getting us from the South East.  The water clarity was mostly good and 54 degrees with nice growth on the kelp.

When the sun would break through and shine we managed to pick up a nice variety of fish.  George caught a 5 lb dark red Vermilion and we also picked up some nice Blues, Gophers, Kelps, Browns, Black & Yellows and an Olive.  No Lingcod or Cabezon were on the bite today. 6.27.08

Friday morning launch is going to be just a little south of the Big Cypress Tree in the Arroyo Laguna area.  Wanna go with The Yak Pack meet us there at 6:30 a.m. 6.26.08

John, who we fished with at Spooners last week is going to be camping with friends at San Simeon campground this weekend.  They are planning to go out in N. San Simeon near the Big Cypress Tree on Saturday morning and going to head out somewhere in the area on Sunday morning.  If you want to paddle out with these guys you can call John at 661.747.2525 or show up Saturday morning. 6.24.08

Some guys secretly launched at Windmills on Monday morning, caught some dinks and got blown around.  Better luck next time. 6.24.08

Looking to head out on Friday morning the 27th.  Anyone want to kayak fish at the crack of dawn?  Haven't decided where yet, thinking N. San Simeon, Cayucos or maybe Spooners.  Waiting to get more weather info. and see if anyone has any preferences as where to launch.  Email: CayucosSportfishing@gmail.com 748.3587 John 6.23.08

Cayucos Sportfishing T-shirts are now available at cost and are totally bitchin'.  Click here to check them out and purchase.  These quality shirts ship out fast.  The white color surrounding the logo does not appear on the shirts. 6.22.08

BK and friend launched a tin at Leffingwell this morning and headed North around San Simeon Creek for some tough fishing.  They said the wind picked up early and they were difting fast.  They managed to pick up a couple keeper rockfish before getting blown back in. 6.22.08

Please put me on the list, as I am always looking for people to fish with.  I really want to fish further N when it looks good, up @ Alder Creek.  I've seen guys launch there, but its not one that you want to do alone due to no margin of error for safety if you get in trouble.  I spoke with a guy who was knocked out on the beach coming in @ Harvey Street.  Some folks beachside pulled him in, and probably kept him from drowing.

(Friday) Fishing early AM N of Cambria.  Launched @ Pico Creek in San Simeon.  There is a nice groundswell coming in, and I almost lost my hat punching through a wave going out.  I managed to stay perpendicular to the wash and arrest my backward surf in.  I think the trick is .... even though you are in shock from the water down your back, you keep paddling forward .... HARD!!!

The AM was warm, clear, beautiful and glassy calm.  No pics as I whipped out my camera and the battery was dead.

The water is still chilly and the bite was slow for everything but Gophers.  I caught and released around 25 of them.  Scratched up one barely legal Ling, and thats all.  I kept him due to that fact that I can see all six of the inside sides of my freezer right now.  The folks coming in @ Leffingwell, also said it was slow for them, so I did not feel so bad.

Fish Tacos tonite!!!

Rustic Andy 6.21.08

On Friday's beautiful night a pier angler in Cayucos caught a very nice 30 inch Piked Dogfish shark right around midnight using frozen squid.  The guy said these sharks have to be fileted right away while the shark is still alive or the meat gets funky, they have a spine on each dorsal fin that is venomous and are often in large schools. 6.21.08

Has anyone ever been out kayak fishing on a full moon late at night?  Any ideas?  I'm thinking Constatines kelp beds, glow in the dark lures and a mag-lite to charge up the lures. 6.20.08

Local kayak angler Andy is going to launch tomorro Friday morning at the crack of dawn in the San Simeon area.  I believe he is going to go out at the Big Cypress Tree or somewhere just south of there.  If anyone is interested in heading out to do some fishing contact the website for more information or just show up in the morning. 6.19.08

The Yak Pack headed out of Spooner's Cove early Saturday Morning at the crack of dawn.  We had the pleasure of fishing with 2 new Pack members Bobby and John.  The bite was off in Estero Bay,  but I think we did better than some boaters though.  The 6 of us caught a ton of Gophers, some Blacks, a few short Lings, a Canary, a Brown and a Black & Yellow.  The water was 54 degrees and a little bumpy, very dirty and the fog never lifted, but all in all it was another great trip. 6.15.08

The Big Sur Fish Report.  Headed up the coast on Sunday morning, there were at least 6 kayak anglers jigging the kelp at Alder Creek.  As I drove by, I realized the need for a very light kayak.  On the way home I stopped at LingCod Alley and scoped out the area.  Found a cool LingSkull and lots of big fish heads.

The Big Sur Coast weather was in the low 70's all week and in the mid 80's at Fernwood.  Slight breezes on the coast with giant windswell from offshore.  Did a little shore fishing at Partington Cove wanting to jump in the water, but the cove was surging really hard.

Tuesday evening a kayak angler Nate from down south paddled out at Mill Creek.  The waves and the windswell were big, but he paddled out right between the sets.  I stopped back by later and watched him bob all around and paddle in, he timed it perfectly making it look easy, but it was too rough out there to catch any fish.

Thursday morning I somehow ended up paddling out on my knees at Limekiln around 6:30 a.m.  The water was 50 degrees and there was more windswell than swell and minutes later the breeze kicked in.  I paddled out to the Limekiln HoneyHole and got schooled by some Blacks and picked up a nice Gopher, before getting blown back in. 6.15.08

I'm back and ready to go.  Going to launch at Spooner's Cove Saturday the 14th at the crack of dawn.  Wanna go! 6.13.08

Cayucos Sportfishing is officially on vacation.  Hope to report back with a good fish report.  Going to try and reel em' in off the shore, spear em' and hopefully be able to get out on the yak. 6.7.08

PACIFIC COAST LOCAL NAMES 6.5.08

Here's the latest shortcut to Piedras Blancas weather observations. 6.3.08

It sounds like the Halibut are starting to rip on the Central Coast.  Reports from Port San Luis are getting better by the day.  They're slaying them in San Francisco.  A kayak angler in Cayucos caught a few dink rockfish, except a 35 inch Halibut on his last drop of the day while getting blown in by the wind on Sunday morning. 6.2.08

If you're planning to head out and looking for people to paddle out with; let me know and I can post your name and place you're going to go out at.  Contact information optional.  When people respond to your post, I will forward them to you.  It's that easy! 5.31.08

BK and I are going to play in the surf with our kayaks Sunday morning, June 1st.  Not at the crack of dawn, probably sometime around 11 a.m.  We're going to go out and practice catching some waves in either Morro Bay or Cayucos.  Looking to get a better feel of what our kayaks can do without losing any gear.  If you want to join in contact: CayucosSportfishing@gmail.com or 748.3587 John 5.31.08

If you're new to fishing or looking to get someone hooked on this great sport of ours; the California Department of Fish and Game offers two free fishing days each year.  On these two dates during the year anglers are permitted to fish without a valid California fishing license in their possession.  The first free fishing day is June 7th and the second is on September 27th.  All other rules and regulations are in force.  California DFG Regulations. 5.31.08

Thanks to Larry and the guys at work, I'm going digital.  I went and got myself a Fishfinder GPS combo.  Whenever I'm far out and theres no kelp; I'm always wondering where the rockpiles and drop-offs are.  The Arroyo to Simeon run was a long paddle and when I saw the fog bank off in the distance, it made me wish I had a GPS on board.  I'll let you all know how it goes once it arrives and I get a chance install it and figure out how it works. 5.29.08

Some guys paddled out of Spoonies this morning taking advantage of the calm seas.  They ended up drift fishing over a nice rockpile and loaded up on some big Redds and a nice Lingcod. 5.28.08

It's good to get reminders to let us know how close to shore some of those Big Lings are.  A new readers uncle busted a 23lb and a 14lb Ling shore fishing off the Bluffs in Cayucos over Memorial Weekend.  Nice Catch! 5.28.08

Thinking of heading out somewhere this Saturday or Sunday depending on what the weather is going to be like. 5.27.08

I have a campsite reserved for Sunday, June 8th through Friday, June 13th at Limekiln campground.  I will be up there with the kayak and my lounge chair all week.  So far, theres a couple yakkers going to try and make it up there for a day or two.  Going to fish somewhere between Cape San Martin and Lopez Point whenever the weather permits.  If you want to join in on the trip or get information about the area, let me know before June 7th or come track me down.  John 5.27.08

If anyone is interested in posting information anywhere on this site please contact: CayucosSportfishing@gmail.com or call 748.3587 John 5.27.08

Beautiful morning at Arroyo Laguna with the pleasure of fishing with 3 new Yak Pack members.  The water is still very murky along the inside and the kelp has a lot of growing to do on the outside.  The 6 of us caught a very nice assortment of Redds, Olives, Blues, Lings, Kelp Greenlings, Kelps and a big Black & Yellow along the way to San Simeon.  Dan caught some very nice Johnnie Bass, Ryan picked up a Ling and check out Larry's full stringer.   It was a long journey and a lot of fun. 5.26.08

UPDATE: The Memorial Day Monday launch is going to be just south of the Big Cypress Tree and we will be fishing from Arroyo Laguna around Point San Simeon and come in at the Pier.  Great trip to come join in on the action with the The Yak Pack. 5.23.08

Fish Report from the White Mountains  I hiked up to the Upper Cliffs and caught 8 Brownies to 14 inches.  Panther Martin spinner works well.  On Sunday I went down to the Itch Ridge and found my lost cap.  Then caught a 15 inch at Flattop Rock pool.  My best fish was a 17 inch caught at Hookjaw pool.  I photoed and released the fat male.  Caught 6 fish for 14 total.....all released.  Good hike only saw 4 other people. We didn't make it out this morning.  The ocean had morning sickness, it was foggy, cold and not sure if the wind was going to blow again.  Its looking like we're going to try again sometime this weekend. 5.19.08

Late afternoon today BK and I went for a nice paddle in Cayucos.  The weather was great and the fish weren't biting.  Tried using Swimbaits and Irons, but the only thing checking us out was a ton of Seals and Otters.  I'm going to try again Monday in N. San Simeon. 5.16.08

The Pack met up in N. San Simeon on Wednesday morning, we had 4 yaks and another pack had 3 yaks.  The water looked like it had turned over, very dirty and murky on the inside.  Everyone paddled out over 1 mile to find some clear water and patchy kelp stringers.  Ended up fishing 80 to 100 feet of water catching very nice Redds and Coppers.  The big fish was a 6 pound Copper only 2 pounds short of the CA record.  We also caught 5 short Lings and a nice assortment of Rockfish, Blues, Olives, Kelps and Gophers.  Check out the catch: Chucklehead and Reddz rev. 5.15.08

I'm planning on going yak fishing on my birthday Monday, May 19th.  If you want to go let me know.  Going to fish somewhere between Cayucos and N. San Simeon. 5.13.08

We're heading out tomorro at the crack of dawn in N. San Simeon.  Going to launch just south of the Cypress Tree.  Contact CSF or just show up tomorro. rev. 5.13.08

It was a beautiful morning the water was flat and the fish were fighting very hard.  Started out catching a juvenile Cabezon and also released a close to legal Lingcod.  Ended up catching a couple Blacks & Yellows and a Kelp for some tacos.  On the way in I landed my first 10lb Ling measuring 30 inches.  Boy that was fun on my new rod and a great way to end the day.  Linger Pics 5.11.08

The weather forecast for Wednesday is looking good.  Anyone want to kayak fish in N. San Simeon at the crack of dawn?  Let me know and I'll try and get the day off.   We can meet at the Cypress Tree and launch at one of the spots just south from there.  Email or Cell: CayucosSportfishing@gmail.com 748.3587 John 5.10.08

Close call out in N. San Simeon this morning.  One of the kayaks filled up with water a couple hundred feet offshore soon after launching.  The kayak had to be towed in.  It looks like the kayak carriers  that go through the scuppers are  going to have to be re-designed.  One of the posts from the carrier split the plastic at the top of the scupper.  We have seen carriers that are simple and are made using a piece of pipe for the axle and two small bicycle wheels.  The kayak just sits on top with a strap over it to hold everything in place.  They said it was a beautiful morning and the ocean was calm.  It just wasn't meant to happen today, glad everyone is O.K. 5.10.08

Anyone want to bring some fish home for Mama on Mothers Day, let me know.  I'm looking for someone to go kayak fishing with on Sunday, since I have to work on Saturday.  It looks like some of the guys are going out in San Simeon early on Saturday morning.  I'm planning on getting out very early on Sunday morning.  Want to go,we can meet at the launch?  Cell: 748.3587  John. rev. 5.9.08

Thanks for all the positive responses.  I have recieved several emails from people who are interested in The Yak Pack.  I have put their email addresses on a list, so they can be informed of any upcoming trips or inform us when they are planning a trip.  I think this pack is going to work out and get everyone more days on the water.  If you would like to be added to the pack email list send a message to:  CayucosSportfishing@gmail.com 5.7.08

Hey Mike W.  I should have asked you for your email address on Saturday afternoon.  If you ever want to hit up Spoonies or Simeon for flattys let me know. 5.5.08

Stoked on the weather outlook for this weekend.  It's looking like its going to be flat, still a little early to tell though. 5.5.08

This morning in Cayucos looked like the nicest morning of the season, cloudy and overcast with good visibility and a slight breeze.  The ocean was layed down very nicely, nice southern breakers hitting the beach.  The boats didn't look like they were getting beat up at all.  Didn't wake up early enough to get out on the kayak, still waiting for it to flatten out and the wind to die, before I get too excited. 5.4.08

I checked out Cayucos Point this morning to see a nice south swell rolling through the beds.  On the way up north I noticed a boat outside of Killers and Virgs outside of Abs.  At Leffingwell there was alot of kayaks out (probably about 10)along with some inflatables.  The launch looked good, even with the south, out in the water there was a mixed swell with a steady breeze.  The anglers had mixed results, some catching, some getting skunked and some getting sea sick.  I did happen to see some nice Redds and Assorted Rockfish and got to meet some anglers. 5.3.08

Thanks to all those who checked out this website.  The free message board below doesn't display much history, so information can get lost.  If you would like to setup or join us in a fishing adventure or post something here permanently in this column or elsewhere on this site email:  CayucosSporfishing@gmail.com 5.2.08

Opening Day Fish Report..........Walked out to Cayucos Point this morning and the water was like a wash machine with a slight breeze and a noticeable south swell.  It was doable, but didn't look the least bit enjoyable.  It was nice to see Virg's boats heading out though.  Don't know of anyone fishing off a kayak today, but did see someone heading to MB this morning all rigged up and ready to go.  He was driving very slow and kind of reminded me of a surfer out driving around wishing there was surf.

Virg's Sportfishing had three boats out and did a great job on the Redds reporting to have caught well over 100 with one of the jackpots being over 7 lbs.  They said they caught several Lingcod, but all of them were shorts.

On the Pacific Horizon all day boat 20 anglers caught 69 Assorted, 90 Redds and 2 Bolina for a grand total of 161 Rockfish.  The Big fish was 5 lb Redd.

On the Patriot Half day boat 23 anglers caught 116 Assorted and 26 Redds for a grand total of 142 Rockfish.  The Big fish was only a 3 lb Redd. 5.1.08

Another big Steelhead seen in the creek at the Pit.  A crazed kid jumped in and wrestled the fish bringing it to near death, before attempting to release it back to the ocean, but did he.

Angler was spotted slightly north of the Pit reelin' in a big 10lb Steelhead off the beach on Saturday afternoon.  He was using a carolina rig and was fishing for Stripers when the Steelhead grubbed his grub.

Looking for people to kayak fish "Cayucos Point" when the weather is good during March and April.  Stripers, Halibut or an occasional misfit.  Let's get out there!  Contact the website or leave a message on the board below.

Big Largemouth caught at Santa Margarita.  The water is starting to clear up and the bite should be picking up.

Rumor has it that Salmon Season may not open this year.  There's probably alot of Salmon out there they don't want us to catch.  Better go buy some farmed raised Salmon instead.

The bite at Santa Margarita is still very slow.  The Lake is over 100 percent and with the recent rains the water is still very muddy.

Perch are still not ripp'in in the Estero Bay.  Anglers using grubs and those using cutbait all had no luck out at the Spit and at Toro on 2/19 during the smallest swell and best tides of the week.  Not alot of sand at the Spit and the shelf was very far out.  Toro looked promising near the point with good depth, but no ripps and the beach was very flat to the north.  All the Anglers saying this year has been very slow.

Estero Anglers Club is on haitus till further notice.  If you are interested in joining the club this summer click on: EAC
